Back

Like most people, the thought of doing a full push-up always seemed a bit daunting to me. Looking back, it mainly came down to having a weak upper body and not knowing where to start.

So I decided to begin with belly push-ups. They might look easy, but don't underestimate them. They're a great way to build strength in your chest, shoulders, and arms, and they helped give me the confidence to progress onto more challenging variations.

Which leads me nicely onto knee push-ups.

Take this one easy. I always try to keep my body balanced and reduce the pressure on my knees as much as possible. That's mainly because I train outdoors in the garden all year round, whether it's wind, rain, or sunshine.

This is still the variation I use most often, although I'm gradually working my way towards full push-ups. At the moment, I can manage around six proper push-ups before my form starts to suffer, and I'd rather do fewer correctly than force out extra reps.
