London Through a Cabbie's Eye

Back

Last year, I attempted a charity walk from Woolwich to Richmond in aid of Cancer Research UK. Why?

To be honest, I never really had a reason. I just believed in doing something good for others.

If I remember rightly, the total distance was around 35 miles. To a seasoned walker, that probably doesn't sound particularly far.

At the time, though, I was in a very different place. I weighed 21st 10lbs, and the thought of walking that distance terrified me. That's how I knew it was the right challenge.

To help keep myself on track, I started an Instagram page called A Cabbie's Tale to document my progress with pictures and videos. Another thing that helped was being part of a Muay Thai gym in East London, which gave me a solid base to prepare for the challenge ahead.

I gave myself four months to train and build up enough fitness to cope with the distance.

I remember thinking just a couple of days before the walk that I still wasn't ready. Looking back, I think that was just the nerves talking.

All the way through, I genuinely enjoyed it. Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of ups and downs. More than once I found myself questioning whether I had what it took to see it through.

Turns out I did.

By the end of the walk, I had managed to raise almost £700. A massive thank you to everyone who donated and helped support those affected by cancer.

Would I do something like that again?

I certainly hope so.
